Warning: Spike in Bird Flu Cases Prompts PETA Alert
November 26, 2024
Vancouver, B.C. – A previously healthy teenager from British Columbia is currently fighting for their life in critical condition due to bird flu, despite having no known contact with bird farms. The alarming news comes as the number of farms in the province affected by the virus has surged to 53 in the past week, raising concerns about the potential spread of the deadly pathogen among humans.
PETA Takes Action
In response to the growing crisis, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has announced plans to launch a campaign in Vancouver. The organization intends to place billboards near local restaurants and grocery stores to raise awareness about the cruelty of the meat and egg industries to birds and the risks they pose to human health.
PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman emphasizes the urgent need for change, stating, “Eating eggs, meat, and dairy from deplorable operations where animals are confined in unsanitary conditions not only is unethical but also increases the likelihood of future pandemics. The only sustainable solution is to adopt a vegan lifestyle, and PETA is here to support everyone in making that transition.”
Deadly Consequences
The impact of the bird flu outbreak in British Columbia has been devastating, with nearly 7 million chickens already euthanized since 2022. The methods used to cull the birds, such as poisoning with carbon dioxide or suffocation with nitrogen foam, are described as inhumane and horrifying by animal rights activists.
PETA highlights the link between animal agriculture and the emergence of infectious diseases, citing past pandemics like AIDS, avian flu, swine flu, SARS, MERS, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19 that originated in animals before spreading to humans.
PETA’s Empathy Initiative
Furthering their mission of promoting compassion towards all living beings, PETA offers free Empathy Kits to individuals seeking to understand the importance of kindness towards animals. The organization’s motto, “animals are not ours to eat,” underscores their commitment to ending animal suffering.
