Zosia: Iowa’s Beloved Therapy Dog

In a heartfelt Instagram post, the Iowa State University Police Department announced the passing of Zosia, Iowa’s first therapy dog at a police station, on Monday, December 02. Zosia, a Golden Retriever, touched the lives of countless community members with her kind and caring soul during her time at ISUPD.

A Legacy of Love and Comfort

Zosia’s journey as a therapy dog began in October 2017 after undergoing extensive training. She quickly became a beloved presence at ISUPD, offering comfort and support to individuals dealing with mental health issues. From responding to crisis calls to visiting classrooms and residence halls, Zosia’s impact was profound and far-reaching.

ISUPD Mental Health Advocate Supervisor and Zosia’s owner, Kinsey Hauser, shared, “She loved on people so well. It didn’t matter who you are, what you’d gone through, she didn’t care. She loved everyone the same.” Zosia’s unconditional love and empathy made her a source of solace for many in need.

A Mother and a Mentor

Beyond her role as a therapy dog, Zosia was also a devoted mother. She had several litters of puppies, with many going on to become service dogs for organizations. Her family, including grandson Zebediah and great granddaughters Sydni and Lena, will carry on her legacy of love and service.

ISUPD expressed their deep sorrow at Zosia’s passing, stating, “Zosia will be profoundly missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren and the work they do at the Iowa State University Police Department.”

Zosia’s impact on the community and her enduring legacy serve as a reminder of the power of love, compassion, and service. As we reflect on her life, let us honor her memory by spreading kindness and support to those around us.
