Retirement didn’t stop a retired police dog named Bear from making a heroic rescue in East Sussex, England. On his first walk since undergoing major surgery, Bear sniffed out and saved a missing person in the forest on November 28. The German Shepherd was accompanied by his owner, Julia Pope, a former police officer, during this remarkable feat.
Bear’s Special Rescue Mission
What made Bear’s rescue even more special was that he was celebrating his 12th birthday on the same day. Just two weeks after having surgery to remove two benign tumors, Bear was back on his paws and on a mission to find the lost individual. While on their walk, Bear detected a man in “dense undergrowth” and immediately alerted Pope to the situation.
A True Hero in Action
The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a charity supporting police dogs in the UK, shared on Facebook that the missing man was a vulnerable individual who had eluded search efforts by officers. Pope recounted how Bear went into “work mode” and led them directly to the man, who was at risk of not surviving the cold and dark night alone.
Pope expressed gratitude for Bear’s quick thinking and decisive actions, as he guided the man back to safety where he could be reunited with his loved ones. She described the entire encounter as a stroke of luck, highlighting Bear’s unwavering dedication even in retirement.

Despite facing health challenges that required emergency surgery in 2023, Bear’s resilience and training as a police dog shone through during this critical moment. Adopted by Pope after serving with the Sussex Police Dog Unit for seven years, Bear continues to embody the spirit of service and heroism.
